There are numerous examples of great looking websites available for reviewing. I spend a considerable amount of time examining websites and determining exactly how they work. It never ceases to amaze me how simple yet elegant websites continue to impress me. When reviewing websites, I look for the following secrets which should be incorporated into every website.
Websites should be usable. You will read about usability everywhere. For me, usability means that a website is easy to get around. The navigation is simple to follow. Visitors do not have to look for the home button. Also, the pages are well laid out using a logical process. The website uses common web pages (i.e. home, about, contact, etc.). When visiting a website, you should find the common elements of most websites in time proven locations (i.e. logo in the top right position).
The website structure is easy to update. A well designed website incorporates reusable modules that are easily plugged in wherever needed. The structure should be simple to understand yet robust enough to withstand the changes required to support a visitor’s device (desktop, laptop, tablet, smartphone). The Divi theme combined with WordPress provides an easily updatable and robust platform.
Pages should be fast loading. Nothing will make a visitor leave your website quicker than having to wait for a web page to load. Check and double check the size of all images and graphics. Seek for a balance between server-side and client-side processing. Ensure that web pages are checked using a variety of devices and connections. There are plenty of tools available to check the speed of a website.
The main message of each web page should be conveyed in a manner that makes it easy for visitors to quickly understand what is going on. Don’t confuse visitors with a variety of techniques such as flash movies and pop-ups. While these web page elements do have their place in web design, they should not take away from the main message you are trying to convey.
These website design secrets seem fairly easy to incorporate yet many websites fail to follow these simple steps. The great websites use these simple design patterns effectively and the visitor typically does not notice the simple elegance being presented. The website does not interfere with visitors and all they receive is a great experience.
